Local Schmocal

"This mission creep has the original locavores
choking on their yerba mate."

This sentence pretty much sums up the controversy brewing over the subject of Kim Severson's article "When 'Local' Makes It Big" from Wednesday's New York Times.  She explores the "broad interpretation" of the meaning of "local food" embraced by large corporations (such as Frito-Lay) in an effort to capitalize on this growing consumer trend.  It's an interesting and educational look at how, as Michael Pollan puts it, corporations "can turn any critique into a new way to sell food."

Good Morning Kids....This article is all about lo(-)cal and potatoes....what a perfect segway into something I wanted to share...and that is my mashed potatoes...they too contain potatoes (locally bought....anyway, after an irrate phone call from Jenny Craig, I tell ya, you have Kirstie over for dinner one time and all of a sudden everything is my fault....but I digress....I was trying to make my mashed potatoes a little more lo-cal while not sacrificing any of the whipped creamy pillows of buttery goodness that is MP....so I made them as regular except I added Immitation Butter Flavoring....I thought it genious because I put butter flavoring in other things and it turns out great (try my butterscotch bars for verification)...well, evidently when combined with potatoes the butter flavoring turns into kerosine flavoring....it rendered them inedible....I foolishly tried this on the entire pot instead of just a few...so I had to throw them all out....I am still a little curious as to a few variations I would like to try and see if it works...I will keep you updated.....Thats all for now....Until next time....J.R.
